Last Updated on December 5, 2024 by Daniel Williams
Do you know what the capital of New Zealand is? If you answered Wellington, top marks to you! The truth is, many people think Auckland is the capital. Much like the misconception with Sydney across the pond, this is a common but justifiable mistake to make. This vibrant city has all the characteristics of a capital: impressive, modern architecture, large urban areas, beautiful nature, a diverse art and cultural scene, exciting nightlife and entertainment scene, etc.
With so many sights and sounds to experience, many travellers put Auckland at the top of their lists when it comes to visiting New Zealand. If you’ve ever considered visiting this amazing country, we’ve compiled a list of things that will illuminate just why Auckland is so special.
Viaduct Harbour
Viaduct Harbour is the heart of Auckland’s waterfront. It is the spot you go to if you seek interesting dining and shopping options. The rich selection of bars and restaurants provides a fantastic dining experience with the view to boot. The area hosts some of the city’s most popular events, such as sailing competitions and numerous festivals. Its lively energy invites everyone for a lovely afternoon or night out.
Sky Tower
If you ever get a postcard from Auckland, chances are Sky Tower will feature prominently as part of the city’s landscape, being one of its most iconic landmarks (and New Zealand’s tallest structure). However, it is far from being just a famously tall building in the heart of the city. Privately owned by SkyCity, the company also runs casinos, hotels, restaurants, and even an online casino—everything a passionate punter looks for from a renowned establishment.
Standing at over 300 meters, SkyTower offers stunning panoramic views of the city. Additionally, visitors can also enjoy a meal at the revolving restaurant or, for those seeking a little more excitement, there is also SkyJump—a thrilling controlled base jump from the tower.
Auckland War Memorial Museum
Auckland War Memorial Museum is a significant cultural institution, offering visitors a chance to deep dive into New Zealand’s past. Here you will find exhibitions dedicated to the history and culture of the Maori people, as well as insights into the country’s colonial past and displays of New Zealand’s military accomplishments. For anyone wishing to enrich their knowledge of New Zealand, this place is a must, and visitors to Observatory Hill will undoubtedly enjoy the surrounding park and city views.
Auckland Art Gallery
Auckland Art Gallery, Toi o Tāmaki, is a must-see place for all art enthusiasts or anyone seeking a quiet place to escape the busy city. It houses a stunning collection of local and international art, with pieces ranging from historic to contemporary. With many different artists and exhibitions on display throughout the year, it is best to consult the gallery’s website for the latest information.
Waiheke Island
If you’re keen to experience some of the beautiful nature around Auckland, we recommend a relaxing 35-40-minute ferry to Waiheke Island. Whether you want to visit the many wineries, explore hiking trails, or experience the mesmerizing beaches, Waiheke Island offers an ideal escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Rangitoto Island
Yet another island worth visiting if you are a nature lover. Rangitoto is a volcanic island, again a short boat ride from the city. You can opt between catching the Rangitoto Ferry from the Devonport ferry terminals or downtown Auckland. The island is known for its rugged and unique landscape. Here, visitors can enjoy mesmerizing 360-degree views of Auckland from the island’s summit, hiking and exploring lava caves.
Piha Beach
Another great place for a memorable outdoor experience, Piha Beach is famous for its breathtaking cliffs and black-sand beaches. It is very popular with surfers, but this place deserves your attention even if you don’t surf. It is a 40-minute drive away west of Auckland, and it would be prudent to sort out a rental for the occasion. When you get there, make sure to visit Lion Rock, where you will witness incredible views of the beach and coastline.
Mount Eden
Mount Eden is the highest volcanic peak surrounding mainland Auckland, offering incredible views of the city and surrounding areas. A popular activity for visitors and locals alike, the walk to the top isn’t too challenging. Once there, you can enjoy a panoramic views of Auckland, including the harbor, skyscrapers, and surrounding islands. And, of course, the crater at the top adds to the overall experience. If you are looking for an ideal spot for a picnic, Mount Eden will be a hard one to beat.
Kelly Tartlon’s Sea Life Aquarium
This is an ideal option for visiting families with kids or anyone fascinated with sea life. The aquarium, located at the waterfront, is home to many different species, including sharks, sea turtles, and penguins. The underwater tunnel attracts the biggest interest, where visitors can walk through and see sharks swimming overhead. Kelly Tartlon’s Sea Life Aquarium is an ideal combination of educational content and interactive experience.
Albert Park
Albert Park is a beautiful and peaceful green space in the middle of Auckland’s city center. Lush gardens, fountains, and statues make it ideal for organizing a picnic with loved ones. Lcoated close to Auckland’s Art Gallery and the University of Auckland, it’s also great for those wanting to spend some time culturally enriching yourself, after which you can relax and digest those experiences in the tranquil atmosphere of the park.
It wouldn’t be an overstatement to say we’ve only scratched the surface of all the wonderful things you can see and do in Auckland. New Zealand is a magically diverse country that has something for everyone, and this is very much reflected in its biggest and most vibrant city. The only question that remains – when are you planning your visit?
